SMAP - MR S-Saitei de Saikou no otoko-

SMAP - MR S - The Worst and The Best Man

(Welcome to my first real translation post! Ooh, the excitement.)

This song is the leading song of the 2014 album "Mr. S" by SMAP, which according to Wikipedia, is the only SMAP album thus far not to have "SMAP" in the title. Which I have never previously noticed despite claiming to be a huge SMAP fan. Go figure. This is an uptempo song with a jazz flavour which I would recommend to anyone - it's the type of catchy song that sticks in your head that you don't have to be a SMAP fan to enjoy, I think.

I really wanted to put these lyrics into a table but apparently Blogger thinks this is something only achievable by those with knowledge of HTML (of which I have approximately 0) so the following will have to do. Remember to comment with any suggestions/corrections you may have!

Enjoy the glorious 240p PV I found for you on Youtube.

Mr.S-SAITEI DE SAIKOU NO OTOKO-

Mr.S噂しながら
「どうして忘れないの?」

サヨナラも上手なんてちょっとデキすぎなんじゃないの?
性悪でセンチメンタルなsmile
最低で最高のそんな男がいるんだって
もしかしてほら目の前にstand

さっきからあなたずっとなんかニヤニヤしてるよね
もう一度聞くんだけど
あなたがまさかMr.S?

知らぬふりならムダだよ
知らぬふりでもいいけど
あの子のハートを奪った
Mr.Sは誰のこと?

MR S -The Worst and The Best Man-

Does anyone know Mr S? [1]
The rumoured man full of mystery
No matter who you ask about him, their answers are always all over the place

Is he shy and straight forward? [2]
Sweet and serious?
Does he really exist?
“That guy will always be special to me”
It seems he’s the type of guy people say that about

You say he’s subtly sadistic and easy to hate? [3]
Before you realise it, he shakes up girl’s hearts
You’ve been sort of smirking this entire time
I’m just asking to check, but
Could it be possible that...you’re Mr S?

Even that perfect girl who he accidentally fell in love with [4]
Whoever you ask has great memories of him

Is he a gentleman or a boy?
Honest or a smooth talker?
Does he really exist?
“What I remember about him was his sexy silhouette”
Seems like he’s both the worst guy and the best

You say his actions make you feel both lonely and excited?
Before you realise it, he steals a girl’s heart

You've been smirking this entire time
I’ll ask one more time, but
Could it be possible that...you’re Mr S?

That girl was crying and laughing
As she gossiped about Mr S
“Why can’t I forget him?”

He’s even good at goodbyes, doesn't he seem a bit too perfect?
With that ill-natured, sentimental smile
That best and worst guy exists, apparently
And look, could even be standing right in front of you

You've been smirking this entire time
I’ll ask one more time, but
Could it be possible that...You’re Mr S?

Pretending you don’t know is useless
It’s okay if you pretend not to know but,
The guy who snatched away that girl’s heart...
Who is Mr S?

Translation Notes

This song was fairly easy to translate apart from a few little sections which I have numbered. The concert pamphlet for SMAP's tour MR S -SAIKOU DE SAIKOU NO CONCERT TOUR- was extremely helpful as it basically gives you the back story to the song as well as English and French translations of parts of the song to set the scene. Thanks, pamphlet.

[1] So what does the "S" in Mr S stand for, exactly? According to our friend the pamphlet, it stands for SAIKOU (the best), SAITEI (the worst), SARIGENAI (nonchalant), SADISTIC, SHOCKING, and SILENT. Basically anything you can think of that begins with the letter S - if you look at the lyrics the parts written in English are all words beginning with S.

Of course the most obvious answer is that "S" stands for SMAP, in fact the pamphlet even says there are 5 possible people who could be Mr S: the 5 members of SMAP.

[2] Rather than the katakana ストレート they've written this in English to fit in with the "S" theme - but they're quite clearly wondering if he's a straightforward person, rather than questioning Mr S's sexuality.

[3] Technically a better translation for さりげなく is nonchalant, but the pamphlet has this line in it and they've translated it as "subtly sadistic and easy to hate" so for consistency's sake this is what I've written.

[4] To be honest I'm not entirely sure what this line means - I think it's Mr S who accidentally fell in love with her, but I feel it would make more sense if it was her who made the mistake - she's normally perfect, but even she couldn't resist Mr S's charms. Suggestions for this line are very much welcomed!

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to Lauren Loves Language, a blog by me - Lauren!

I'm a 22 year old girl living in the UK who last year graduated from university with a 2:1 degree in Japanese. I spent my 3rd year studying abroad at ICU in Tokyo, Mitaka, where I made a lot of friends from all over the globe who I currently miss terribly.

For a while now I've wanted to set up my own blog to practice my Japanese - English translation skills, as it's something I'd like to do in the future. I already enjoy Japanese culture so I figured why not set up a blog to talk about it!

Question and Answer session

What makes you think you can come in here and translate Japanese?

I recently graduated with a 2:1 degree in Japanese. I'm thinking of going back some day eventually to undertake a postgrad in translation, but for now I just wanted to practice my translation skills for fun and decided setting up a blog would be a fun way to go about it.

So how accurate are your translations?

I can't promise my translation skills are absolutely perfect as, like I said, this blog is mainly for practice and for fun. Even though I have a degree in Japanese I'm bound to make lots of mistakes like anybody else. If anyone spots any mistakes in my translations, go ahead and comment/tell me about them, because I'd love to learn where I went wrong and it's the only way I can improve! I promise I won't bite, I'm nice.

What sort of things will you translate?

Mainly (and by this I mean I don't really have any other plans to translate anything else at the moment) Japanese music as that is my one true love. Artists I like include Ayumi Hamasaki, SMAP, NEWS, Akina Nakamori, KinKi Kids, Morning Musume, Perfume, and many more.

Do you take requests?
At the moment I'm not planning on taking requests because 1) I only just set up this blog and I'm not sure anyone is actually reading this and 2) As previously said I'm really just doing this for fun and I'd hate to mess up someone's favourite song with a translation that might not be as good as someone else's!

Is this just a translation blog? Will you post about other things?

I'm hoping that I'll post both (humorous) reviews as well as translations. This means reviews of music and my other great love, Japanese drama.

Are you being paid for this?

No, but please pay me. Please.

I've been watching a lot of Gossip Girl recently and so was highly tempted to end this blog post with "you know you love me xoxo gossip girl" but felt that would be inappropriate and out of place. Thanks for reading!
